I downloaded that patch from several different web and FTP sites. It says that TR Legend must be installed first.

No, you cannot install official patches on DEMO versions of the game/applications. The demo version is delivered to offer you a glimpse at the game or application. You will actually need to install/purchase the full version of the game to be able to apply the available patches.
